Using multimedia: images, audio and video


IAV01 What type of images, audio and video can I upload?

Demographix lets you upload images, audio and video files from your computer so they can be incorporated into your surveys. You can upload images in the following formats: JPG, GIF, PNG, PSD or BMP. Audio can be MP3, OGA, WAV or AAC files. Videos can be in FLV, MP4, WMV, MOV, AVI, MPG, MPEG, OGV, OGG, WEBM, OR M4V format. It is important to check that images and video are optimised for web usage, and that they are in compressed formats – videos will have an embedded screen width when saved.
NOTE: If images do not upload, it is often because they are too big (in dimensions or in file size) and you should ask for a more compressed version from the supplier. There is a tool within Demographix to resize images once uploaded, and all images used within a survey have an optional facility to use thumbnails.

IAV02 How do I upload an image into the system?

Go to the Shared Resources menu at the top of screen and click on the Media Library link. Click on the Upload tab. The types of file you can upload are listed there. Click the Browse button and locate the file on your machine. Open it, add a description of it (use a unique identifier – you can assign a different caption to it in the survey later), and click the UPLOAD button. You will be asked to confirm the file upload after the action has been performed.
NOTE: You can also upload an image within the Question/Item Editor when selecting a question format using Images. Once the question type has been selected a Manage Images link will appear. The pop-up window will then have a link to UPLOAD NEW IMAGEbrowse for the image, name it and upload it. It will then be available for immediate use in the Question Editor.

IAV03 How do I resize an image in Demographix?

In the Shared Resources menu at top of screen, click on the Media Library link and go to the Images tab. Find the image you want to edit using from the list and click on it. Click on the Resize option. Using the slider, reduce the size to the level you want – it will show you the new percentage size on the right-hand side. Then choose Overwrite or Save as.... We generally recommend you save it as a new image, in case there's anyone else using the larger-sized image for other surveys in the account. Demographix defaults with a suggested name of the new image (with a suffix number representing the percentage size). You can use the suggested name for the new image or change it to one of your own. Click SAVE and the edit will complete.

IAV04 How do I change an image I've already put into my survey?

Click on the Image question in the survey navigator at left, so the Question Editor box appears at right. Click the MANAGE IMAGES option, and from the Select Category dropdown menu, choose the category of the new image and then select its name from those available in that category. The new image will preview below: if it's the one you want to use, then click the ADD button at right, and the image name will appear in the "Selected Images" box. Now delete the previous image by clicking the icon next to its name. Click Apply and the new image will appear in the workspace. Update and preview the survey to check the changes.

IAV05 How do I categorise an image file in Demographix?

In the Shared Resources menu at top of screen, click on the Media Library link and go to the Images tab. Select the image you want to categorise and click on ASSIGN TO CATEGORIES. You can tick any of the existing categories, listed below, or click the icon to introduce a new category folder.

IAV06 How do I upload an audio file into the system?

IAV08 How do I categorise an audio or video file in Demographix?

In the Shared Resources menu at top of screen, click on the Media Library link and go to the Audio or Video tab. Find the file you want to categorise, by using the Audio/Video Categories and Select Audio/Video drop-down lists. Select the audio/video file you want to categorise and click on ASSIGN TO CATEGORIES. You can tick any of the existing categories, listed below, or click the icon to introduce a new category folder.

IAV09 Can I get an audio or video to autoplay in a survey?

By default, any audio or video asset in a survey will NOT autoplay, so the survey respondent must click on the asset to view it or listen to it. However, you can choose to autoplay the first asset on a page (when the page is viewed) by selecting an option in the Page Properties. Just tick the option labelled "Auto play first audio/video on this page" in the Page Options list. Only the first multimedia asset will autoplay on a page – other assets will need to be activated by respondents.

Using lists of frequently used answer sets


FUA01 How do I create a list of frequently used answers (such as a list of regions or age brackets)?

Click on Shared Resources and select Answer Lists from the menu at top of screen. The "Defined Answer Lists for your account" toolset will appear in the editing window. Click on the drop-down menu and select the "Create new list" option. Give your new list a name in the "List name" text box, ensuring you're not duplicating the name of a list already there. In the "List values" box, enter the range of answers in your list, starting each option on a new line. Use the Sort button if you wish to reorder your list alphabetically. When your list is complete, click the SAVE button at bottom right. Note: We provide a range of often-used lists in the Pre-Defined Lists section, and these are denoted by an asterisk on the pull-down menu.

FUA02 When using a list in a survey, can I add answers to it or take some answers out?

Once you've added the list of answers to the question properties in your survey, you are free to edit it and change it as much as you like. You can add answers, delete answers, change the wording of answers. These changes won't be replicated in the original list – they will only take effect in this survey.

FUA03 How do I edit a frequently used list of answers?

Click on Shared Resources and select Answer Lists from the menu at top of screen. The "Defined Lists for your account" toolset will appear in the editing window. Click on the drop-down menu and select the list you want to edit. The List values will appear in the box below. Edit these and click on the SAVE button.

FUA04 How do I delete a frequently used list of answers?

Click on Shared Resources and select Answer Lists from the menu at top of screen. The "Defined Answer Lists for your account" toolset will appear in the editing window. Click on the drop-down menu and select the list you want to delete. The List values will appear in the box below. Click on the Delete button. A notification will appear, asking if you want to delete this list. Click the Yes option. Note: Your deleted list will appear on the menu in grey until you refresh the main list by reloading the Answer Lists under Shared Resources.

FUA05 How do I create a new list of frequently used answers using an existing list as a template?

Click on Shared Resources and select Answer Lists from the menu at top of screen. The "Defined Answer Lists for your account" toolset will appear in the editing window. Click on the drop-down menu and select the list you want to use as a template. The List values will appear in the box below. Click on the Duplicate button and a write-in box for the new list name will appear, showing the template name plus the word [COPY]. Edit this name to a new name and click the SAVE button. Your new list will now appear on the menu.

Using the scrapbook to move questions between surveys


SBK01 How do I copy a question or item into the Scrapbook?

Click on the question or item you want to copy so that the menu icon appears at right. Click on this and select "Question to Scrapbook" option. You can then select whether to copy or move the question. Select the one you want, and confirm your action.

SBK02 How do I insert a question or item from the Scrapbook into a survey?

At the bottom of the survey page you are working on, click on the icon. The Scrapbook contents will appear as a pop-up. Tick the select box or boxes next to the content you want to insert on the page and click the INSERT SELECTED ITEMS button. The question/s will then appear in that page.

SBK03 How do I delete questions from the Scrapbook?

Go to Shared Resources and select Question Scrapbook from the menu at top of the screen to bring up the Scrapbook Manager tool in a pop-up. Tick the boxes next to individual items you wish to delete OR tick the Select all button to choose them all. Click the DELETE SELECTED ITEMS button. NOTE: You can only delete items in your Scrapbook that you personally put there. If an item has been shared by another person you cannot delete it. You will have to ask them to unshare it.

SBK04 How do I share items in my Scrapbook with other users in my account?

Go to Shared Resources and select Question Scrapbook from the menu at top of the screen to bring up the Scrapbook Manager tool in a pop-up. There is a Share button next to every question in your Scrapbook. If you click on this, a notification will appear saying: "Allow other users in your account to see this item in their Scrapbook". Click Yes to confirm.

SBK05 How do I stop sharing items in my Scrapbook with others in my account?

Go to Shared Resources and select Question Scrapbook from the menu at top of the screen, to open the Scrapbook Manager in a pop-up. Shared items are shown with a red dash next to them. Click on this and a notification will appear saying: "Prevent other users in your account from seeing this item in their Scrapbook". Click Yes to confirm.
