Creating a new survey
CNS01 How do I create a new survey?
If your log-in type allows you to create your own surveys (Account Holders, Full Users and Creators only) then a CREATE NEW SURVEY link appears at the top right of your Survey Dashboard. Click on this, and you will be asked to give the new survey a name (this will be visible to respondents), an internal reference and (optionally) to specify its category. Once these have been entered, click the CREATE NEW SURVEY button, and your new survey is ready to start editing. It will now appear in the list of surveys, immediately after you save it. If you are a Colleague log-in, you will need to ask your manager to create a new survey and give you access permission.
CNS02 How do I create a survey template?
Most users create a survey template for one of two reasons: either they need to have a specific style sheet to reproduce a survey's appearance (primarily to maintain consistent brand values), or they have a set of core questions that they want to reproduce in many surveys. A template can be created and categorised by giving the survey an internal reference beginning "TEMPLATE:" and assigning it to a Templates folder under Category view on the Survey Dashboard. When you want to use the template, simply click on it to view Survey Actions, and click the DUPLICATE button. Then rename the new survey, and re-categorise it, so it doesn't appear in the templates folder.
CNS03 How do I create a new quick poll?
A Quick Poll is a simple single question poll that can be attached to a website – sometimes in an iframe within a web page – that generates a results chart when the poll has been submitted. A Quick Poll survey generates two URLs (the poll URL and the results page URL) both of which are needed by website designers to incorporate the poll and the "instant results" page after submission. If your log-in type allows you to create your own quick polls (Account Holders, Full Users and Creators only) then click on the CREATE NEW SURVEY link at the top right of the survey dashboard and then tick the Quick Poll checkbox at the bottom left of the pop-up window. We suggest you make clear it is a quick poll in your Internal Reference field, and assign it to a Quick Polls category folder.
CNS04 I want to use an exact copy of a survey I used previously. How do I do that?
For all log-ins with survey creation permission, there is a button to DUPLICATE a survey in the Available Actions pop-up window when you click on a survey name. Click this button and a pop-up will show the name and details of the survey being duplicated. Rename the survey (an alert will warn you if you are saving the survey as the same name/internal reference, which could cause confusion later) and save. Your new survey with duplicated content is now ready to edit.
CNS05 What are the core components of the Demographix interface after log-in?
The first screen you see when you log-in is the Survey Dashboard. This shows all the surveys you have access to in your account, grouped in tabs according to their status (In Production, Live, etc) and further information in sortable columns. At right is an Important Information area where Demographix system announcements are made.
When you open a survey to EDIT it, there are two areas in the workspace:
1. The Navigator window: This is the main left-hand sector of the screen where the contents of the survey you are editing is displayed and navigated.
2. The Editing window: This is the right-hand part of the screen, where you specify and edit the elements that go into your survey. The controls that appear here are often Property editors with several tabs to click on to bring up different functions.
Adding and managing questions
AMQ01 How do I add a question to a survey?
Click on the icon at the bottom of any page in the survey. The Question/Item Editor appears at right. Select the question type from the CATEGORY dropdown menu, and style required from the STYLE dropdown. Fill in the subsequent boxes that appear dynamically below, if needed, and click the ADD button. If there are no alerts to say a compulsory property has been overlooked, your question will appear in the workspace.
AMQ02 How do I change the text or answers in a question?
Click on the question text in the survey navigator at left, so the Question/Item Editor controls appear at right. Change the text or answers in their respective boxes and click the SAVE CHANGES button below right. Don't forget to click the UPDATE PAGES or PREVIEW button at the top right of the survey navigator in order to see your changes take effect in the served survey.
AMQ03 How do I delete a question or item?
Hover over the question or item you want to delete and a menu icon will appear at the right. Click on this and select Delete Question from the options listed. An alert box will appear asking: "Delete this question?" Click the Yes button.
AMQ04 How do I duplicate a question or item?
Hover over the question/item you want to duplicate and a menu icon will appear at the right. Click on this and select Duplicate Question from the options listed. The duplicate will be inserted directly below the original question/item.
AMQ05 Can I insert a question from another survey into my survey?
Yes, you can use our handy Scrapbook tool to move or copy a question to the Scrapbook (an option under the Question Actions menu icon when you hover over a question in the navigator). Then go to the survey where you want to insert from Scrapbook and click on the book icon and select the question/s you want to insert into your new survey and click the INSERT SELECTED ITEMS button to confirm the selection. AMQ06 How do I reorder the questions/items on a page?
Click on the page header of the relevant page in the survey navigator. Click the Page Actions menu icon at right, and choose the "Reorder Questions on Page" option listed below. The question reordering tool will then appear. This is a "drag and drop" interface, showing the names or question/answers of all the questions or items on the page. Click on any of these questions/items to move them and re-arrange them in the order you now want. Then click the SAVE button. The survey will reorder the page contents and redisplay it in the workspace at left. After reordering questions on a page, we strongly recommend you click the UPDATE PAGES or PREVIEW button at the top of the screen, and check the new page layout.
Adding and managing pages
AMP01 How do I add a new page?
To add a new page at the end of a survey, simply click the Add New Page icon on the last page. Give it a name, click OK to save it, and then start adding questions to it.
Alternatively, to add a new page between existing pages, simply add a new question (this will be the first one on your new page) to the end of an existing page anywhere in the survey, and then click on this new question to reveal the menu icon , and choose the "Insert page break before Question" option listed there.
AMP02 How do I insert a page break?
Click on the question or item that you want at the start of the new page to reveal the menu icon , and choose the "Insert page break before Question" option on that menu. You will then be prompted to give the new page a name and then click OK to save it. Don't forget to click the UPDATE PAGES or PREVIEW button at the top right of the survey navigator in order to see your changes take effect in the served survey.
AMP03 How do I delete a page?
Click on the relevant page header in your survey to reveal the menu icon at right, and choose the Delete Page option. You will then be prompted to EITHER move all the questions on the page to the Scrapbook for reuse OR delete all the questions on the page as well. Select your preferred option and a confirmation alert will appear. After deleting a page, we strongly recommend you click the UPDATE PAGES or PREVIEW button at the top of the screen, and check the new page layout.
AMP04 How do I delete a page break, to combine the contents of two adjacent pages?
Click on the Remove Page Break icon between the two pages. A confirmation alert will appear and when you click Yes the contents will be merged in the workspace area. You may need to rename the page to reflect the new contents. After removing a page break, we strongly recommend you click the UPDATE PAGES or PREVIEW button at the top of the screen, and check the new page layout.
AMP05 How do I reorder the pages in a survey?
Click on the Re-order pages icon on the survey edit toolbar in the navigator. The page re-ordering tool will then appear. This is a "drag and drop" interface, showing the names of all the pages in the survey. Click on any of these titles to re-arrange them in the order you now want. Then click the SAVE button. The survey will re-arrange the pages and redisplay them in the navigator at left. After reordering pages, we strongly recommend you click the UPDATE PAGES or PREVIEW button at the top of the screen, and check the new page layout.
