Demographix innovates with new Sliders range

13 Aug 2009A major enhancement to the Demographix survey-building toolset will be launched next month when an innovative new question range called Sliders becomes available.

Sliders will allow survey respondents to interface with online data capture in a more user-friendly way, thereby enhancing data collection. Just like controls on a mixing desk or music centre, the sliders provide a more intuitive way for survey respondents to select from a list of answers.

"As with all Demographix designs, we are looking at increasing data reliability by improving response precision," said CEO Derek Cohen. "Sliders will not only make it easier for respondents to give valuable attitudinal feedback, it will also appeal to their web-savviness. In this way researchers can get the kind of quantitative and qualitative feedback that phone and paper surveys can't match."

Sliders will come in four main styles: value statements (Likert scale), mixing desk, numeric scale, and percent split. A great deal of development effort has gone into designing the new question types to make them fully accessible to disabled users (those who cannot use a mouse can still control sliders via the keyboard) and in terms of accurate data capture.

By default, a slider is placed in a N/A position (meaning either No Answer or Not Applicable), so that respondents are not forced to give a value, and default values are not recorded. Questions can be made compulsory, however, to enforce responses if desired.

“It is a design challenge to create slider-type questions that don’t distort data capture, such as by inadvertently recording default values for the cursor position, or accommodating large scales,” said director Bobby Pickering. “We have anticipated and tackled these problems and come up with solutions that seasoned researchers will appreciate. We have also realised that a variety of different sliders are required for different data capture needs.”

GREATER QUALITY AND VALUE INITIATIVE

Sliders are part of the Demographix Greater Quality and Value Initiative in 2009. Enhancements have already included a completely redesigned workspace, improvements to account management functions and data analysis, and extending free group training to purchasers of bundles and annual subscriptions.

All of these enhancements have been provided at no extra cost to users, and without the disruption of software upgrades on users' machines.

The Demographix Greater Quality and Value Initiative will get an even bigger boost towards the end of the year when the Panelwise email and panel management technology is fully integrated into Demographix, and made available at lower cost to annual subscribers.

Demographix users will be notified about the availability of Sliders in coming weeks.

Demographix, the leading UK developer of online research tools, has made major changes to the user interface and feature set of its hosted online survey system.

“With these enhancements we continue to give our users additional power and refined ease-of-use at no extra cost,” said director Bobby Pickering. “We have also made major changes to account management tools and collaboration features that no other supplier in our price range can match.”

UK’s biggest ever mag subscriptions survey begins

10 Oct 2008Demographix teams up with Dovetail, the subscriptions fulfilment house jointly owned by BBC Worldwide and Dennis Publishing, to deliver subscriber service survey for magazine biz

Demographix, the leading UK developer of online research tools, is teaming up with subscriptions marketing and fulfilment experts Dovetail Services to host the biggest ever Subscriber Service Survey for the UK magazine industry.

Magazine publishers taking part in the survey will not only be able to see how subscribers rate the service they are currently getting, but also be able to compare their own results against average industry satisfaction ratings.

The survey, now in its second year, drew 58,000 responses last year with 5 major publishers involved. This year, 26 publishers have signed up for the survey, with over 144 titles involved. Response levels are expected to exceed 200,000.

“It’s a chance for our customers to prove that customer service is at the forefront of their minds, and to track how they’re performing against industry trends,” said Dovetail MD Julian Thorne.

What also attracted participating publishers, he added, was that the survey is entirely free of charge to take part in.

Demographix MD, Derek Cohen, said the survey was another example of the growing customised technology solutions that Demographix is providing for its customers.

“This is a major online project, with significant technological challenges that Demographix is getting a growing reputation for solving. Publishers will be able to see their own results, as well as access to generalised data that shows overall industry ratings. It is unique in the industry.”

Panelwise makes online panels affordable for all!

15 May 2008Easy-to-use service allows you to bypass costly bottlenecks

Demographix, the leading UK developer of online research tools, has launched a panel management system which will enable marketing, sales insight and research teams to manage online panels and email invites for surveys – without having to deal with IT or web departments, or use expensive external agencies.

Panelwise offers an easy-to-use hosted system for research and marketing departments wishing to lower the cost of maintaining online panels of users, customers, members, and other key groups.

Demographix CEO, Derek Cohen, said it helps marketing and research departments overcome significant problems they can encounter when using email management software to circulate survey invitations to their mailing lists (or relying on overstretched IT departments to do it for them).

Among the key facilities Panelwise offers:

  • Three panel building options: using Excel file uploads; recruitment surveys; and selecting members from responses to existing surveys
  • Easy email composition (in either HTML or Plain text formats)
  • Inbuilt email scheduling and testing
  • Powerful panel sub-group selection facilities
  • Automated handling of unsubscribe requests and bounces
  • Easy scheduling for follow-up emails for non-responders

Surveys created within Demographix can be seamlessly assigned to panels, and responses managed through Panelwise.

Cohen said: “By closely listening to our customers, we have identified – and solved – the key problems they have encountered with email invitations for surveys, creating and building panel mailing lists, and selecting targeted subgroups of panels for further research.

“We know that Panelwise will help make panel management an affordable reality to many organisations and companies that cannot afford the huge costs often associated with external agencies.”

In line with the standard Demographix pricing model, Panelwise will be offered on an annual subscription model, with unlimited sizes of panels, and unlimited survey invitations. A one-off usage plan will also be available for single surveys and one-shots to mailing lists.

Demographix also offers managed services for companies who do not have in-house resources to manage panels.

Sales rep feedback system gives Bauer a buzz

28 Mar 2008Demographix trails new paths with customised solutions

A customised sales representative feedback solution, developed by Demographix, has been implemented by the digital sales team at Bauer Advertising.

Originally developed as the ‘Better Emap Service’ initiative for Emap Advertising, the solution allows agency buyers to give instant feedback – anonymously if desired – on pitches, meetings and bookings.

The system has been rebranded as “The Bauer Buzz” following the acquisition of Emap’s consumer business by the Bauer Publishing Group.

The custom-built system was instrumental in helping Emap Advertising’s Digital team notch up a dramatic increase in its service reputation last year – soaring 10 places in the IPA Digital Media Owner Survey.

Demographix is a hosted online survey system used by editorial, marketing and research teams in media companies in the UK, US, Europe and Australia. It is, however, increasingly being used to create custom applications for sales and circulation departments, as well.

“Our media-friendly technologies, including built-in audio and video question types, mean that media clients can now get increased value from customised research systems,” said CEO Derek Cohen.

Demographix custom solution gives EMAP Advertising a boost

19 Nov 2007Customised sales rep feedback system gets significant results.

Emap Advertising’s Digital team has notched up a dramatic increase in its service reputation – soaring 10 places in the IPA Digital Media Owner Survey – following the implementation of a custom-built sales rep feedback system.

Developed in conjunction with Demographix, the ‘Better Emap Service’ initiative allows agency buyers to give instant feedback – anonymously if desired – on pitches, meetings and bookings.

Emap Advertising Digital Sales Director, Bruce Daisley, who commissioned the scheme, said that he had anticipated his team might be wary of such transparency, but in fact it was quickly embraced.

“We wondered if our team would be concerned about bad feedback counting against them, but on the rare occasions that they have received criticism its proved to be a good alert that we need to make amends with the buyer,” said Daisley. “The vast amount of positive feedback has given most of the team a real confidence boost.”

Emap Advertising sales managers can log in to the Demographix system and see how they’re performing, including having access to all the comments made by clients.

In little over two months of implementing the system, Emap Advertising has jumped from 17th to 7th place in IPA survey. Daisley added: “We’re delighted with the results. We designed the system to capture customer feedback in two clicks. The feedback system has shown agencies how serious we are about being the very best in the digital market. We are aiming for the very top next time round.”

Demographix is a hosted online survey system used by editorial, marketing and research teams in media companies in the UK, US, Europe and Australia. It is, however, increasingly being used to create custom applications for sales and circulation departments, as well.

“Forward-thinking clients are looking for bespoke systems based on Demographix technology,” said CEO Derek Cohen. “Our media-friendly technologies, including built-in audio and video question types, mean that media clients can now get increased value from customised research systems.”

Demographix announces Panelwise

16 Aug 2007Hosted panel management system set for beta programme.

Demographix, the online research system favoured by the media industry, is set to strengthen its product portfolio with the launch of a fully-integrated cost-effective panel management system.

Panelwise will offer an easy-to-use one-stop solution for research and marketing departments wishing to lower the cost of maintaining consumer, user or audience panels by bringing them in-house.

"This is something our key customers have been asking for, and we recognise it makes survey deployment easier and more cost-effective than ever," said CEO Derek Cohen. "Panelwise will also offer opportunities for our users to gather and analyse data in an ongoing way with key customers and supporters".

Panelwise will help users overcome significant problems they can encounter when using ordinary email management software to circulate survey invites to their mailing lists. It will help prevent duplication of survey responses, create schedules for sending reminder emails, and allow users to build up mailing lists of supporters or audiences using recruitment forms.

Panelwise will also provide a better user experience for panellists than many currently experience, as there's no requirement for them to remember usernames and passwords each time they complete a survey.

Surveys created within Demographix can be seamlessly assigned to panels, and responses managed through Panelwise.

In line with the standard Demographix pricing model, Panelwise will be offered on an annual subscription model, with unlimited sizes of panels, and unlimited survey invites for just £6,000 per year. A one-off use will also be available for single surveys.

Panelwise will be available to Demographix customers who have signed up for the Beta Programme in early autumn.

If you wish to take part in the Panelwise Beta Programme, please contact Bobby Pickering on +44 (0)20 7112 5111.

Demographix adds more muscle to its analysis feature set

15 Jun 2007UK online survey provider introduces "multiple crosstabs" report facility

Demographix has announced a significant upgrade of its analysis features by introducing a "multiple crosstab" facility to its reporting toolset.

Multiple crosstabs allows customers to select as many questions from their survey and crosstab them with as many other questions as they like, giving Demographix a significant advantage over other online survey providers.

"Our design objectives on this development project were completely in line with the basic mission of Demographix to make survey building, analysis and management easy and straightforward for marketing and research people with little technical knowledge," said Demographix ceo Derek Cohen.

He added: "We want them not only to create surveys easily and get results quickly, but also use the data they gather in a multitude of useful ways. They want to cut and slice that data easily, and cost effectively."

Demographix does not charge extra for multiple crosstab generation; the new facility is all part of the standard system. The company continues to develop features, many suggested by existing and prospective customers (as multiple crosstabs were), and add these to its already rich feature set at no extra cost.

All Demographix customers (whether on annual subscription, survey bundle or one-off plans) are now able to:

  • Filter survey results according to answers in any question in a survey
  • Create a multiple filter on two questions in a survey using AND/OR logic
  • Crosstab on a single question within the live analysis environment
  • Crosstab on multiple questions to create large-scale realtime reports, downloadable in Excel format

Demographix is a premium supplier in the online survey sector, with one-off surveys costing £500, and unlimited annual subscription tariffs starting at £1,000/month.

Demographix introduces embedded video and audio

1 Mar 2007 UK online survey provider gives publishing and media clients a technical advantage

Demographix has announced a market first by introducing embedded video and audio questions within surveys. The new innovations have been greeted with huge enthusiasm by its key publishing and media customers.

"Online survey users are crying out for innovations like ours," said communications director Bobby Pickering. "Researchers and marketing personnel, especially in our core media and publishing sectors, can now add clips of videos or audio files to their surveys and get immediate feedback from readers, website visitors or members."

Derek Cohen, CEO of Demographix, said: "Marketing bosses in major publishing and media companies are turning to Demographix to provide them with the tools that allow them to measure response to their products or their advertisers' campaigns.

"Now, they can test TV or web media campaigns on behalf of clients, get feedback on their podcasts or other MP3 files, and insert clips of their own videos to test response before putting them up on a website."

The new technology is part of Demographix's rolling development programme, upgrading its core system at no extra cost to subscribers.

In the past 12 months it has incorporated extensive new accessibility features, to make surveys accessible to as many respondents as possible. It has also integrated new functionality such as Scoring Surveys (which allow respondents to get an immediate score for their answers) and Save & Resume – whereby respondents on longer surveys can return to filling out the questionnaire at a later date.

Demographix is a premium supplier in the online survey sector, with one-off surveys costing £500, and unlimited annual subscription tariffs starting at £1,000/month.

Demographix announces advances in accessibility

15 Jan 2007Online surveys with AAA rating gives disabled respondents a fair go!

Hosted research tool supplier Demographix has announced market-leading breakthroughs in accessibility for online surveys.

The company believes this gives it an edge over other suppliers in its key markets, where accessibility issues are important to its customers – such as local and central government, the charitable sector, and social science and academic research.

The new improvements will ensure all Demographix surveys meet the requirements of respondents using screen readers, keyboard navigation, or text-only browsers.

"We've taken an active interest in accessibility issues and have endeavoured to achieve the highest accessibility standards," said Paul Ockenden, a director of Demographix and a specialist in accessible web design.

"We've tested our pages using several accessibility tools, aiming for an AAA rating throughout the site. More importantly, we've also tried to go beyond automated testing and think about creating pages so that they are easy to view and navigate by people with visual, motor, cognitive and other disabilities.

New accessibility features include: navigation shortcuts; structured semantic markup; meaningful links; descriptive attributes for all images; resizeable fonts; embedded text in text boxes to prompt screen readers; and streamlined form structure.

The Demographix survey builder technology produces pages which validate as XHTML Strict, and which pass AAA accessibility testing. The company now believes its surveys are the most accessible within the industry.

"We've put prompts in place to remind our customers that disabled people should be able to use their surveys, and have built our tools in a way which encourages them to create disability-friendly surveys," added Ockenden.

Demographix to work with The Prince's Trust on events feedback

10 Nov 2006First appointment in Demographix Community Support programme

The Prince's Trust is to use online survey technology from UK service provider Demographix to conduct research among its extensive network of supporters.

The charity, established by the Prince of Wales in 1976, provides practical support - including training, mentoring and financial assistance - to help 14-30 year olds realise their potential and transform their lives.

In the course of the next year, it will use Demographix to gather feedback from attendees at its many corporate events – such as its Technology Leadership Group meetings for IT professionals.

"We look forward to gathering valuable intelligence from our supporters and mentors over the coming year," said Carol Homden, Commercial Director. "We are always very excited about the possibilities of improving engagement with The Prince’s Trust by having access to impressive technologies like Demographix."

Demographix selects two charitable causes each year to support under its Community Support programme. This is its first appointment in 2006/07.

"Charities often have extensive networks of supporters that they would like to get more feedback from, and deploy that data in useful ways. Their marketing departments are often overstretched, yet realise the benefit in gathering ideas and opinions from individual or corporate supporters," said Bobby Pickering, communications director at Demographix.

Telmar and Demographix in technology link-up

7 Feb 2006Companies join forces to offer media companies a new way to research their audiences

Telmar, the world-leading supplier of computer-based advertising media information services, has joined forces with London-based Demographix Limited to offer media owners and agencies an exciting new way to research their audiences.

Demographix offers a simple yet powerful collaborative tool enabling non-technical people to create, publish and analyse online surveys using just a web browser.

By allowing customers to access the Demographix system from within their familiar eTelmar environment, clients will be able to perform sophisticated analysis on data collected by Demographix surveys, in combination with other data they have access to.

Telmar Managing Director, Alex Maddox, commented: “Our clients generally know what their target audience is watching, reading, and listening to. And now, with Telmar-Demographix, they can also find out what their audience is thinking. It’s a very powerful new research opportunity for the whole media sector”.

“The tie-in with Telmar really adds a new dimension to our offering” said Demographix CEO, Derek Cohen. “We’ve worked hard to create the leading online survey system – the flexibility provided by our design and analysis tools is second to none. Now that our service is available in conjunction with Telmar we’ll be able to allow media companies to enrich their research and give their media planning added depth."

The combined weight of Telmar and Demographix is already proving popular. Leading consumer magazine publisher IPC is on board as the first client, and will be using Demographix extensively.

IPC’s Group Ad Marketing Director Christina Hartley commented: “Demographix is an easy to use, flexible online research tool, which will enable IPC to run more frequent online surveys and have greater control over them. Our first test was a great success and we look forward to using it more and more going forward.”

Demographix introduces "invite a friend" feature

5 May 2005 — Demographix has introduced a powerful new feature, allowing survey respondents the opportunity to forward an invitation to friends or colleagues to complete the same survey as themselves.

Demographix will then send personalised emails to these people on behalf of the respondent, with a link to the survey they have completed and an optional personalised message from their friend.

"Our customers have been looking for ways to widen the response levels of their surveys among people with similar interests and outlook," said Demographix communications director Bobby Pickering. "Many have trawled their existing mailing lists extensively and are looking for new sources of leads. Demographix can offer a solution to this problem."

In line with the deep analysis functions available in Demographix, when a survey owner comes to analyse responses, they will be able to see how many email invitations have been sent out for that survey, and how many surveys were completed as a result. They will then be able to make use of the contact information provided in the survey by these 'friends'.
